City High has a storied history in men's track & field dating to 1908, with its first individual champion, to 2004 when the Little Hawks won their 11th State Team Title, which ranks fourth all-time in Iowa history.
Two City High individuals made the U.S.A. Olympic team, Eric Wilson (400) and Chan Coulter (400 hurdles), which was held in Paris in 1924. Wilson's race was later depicted in the movie, "Chariots of Fire." Coach George Bresnahan was an assistant coach for the 1932 Olympic team. Three graduates won NCAA titles: Eric Wilson 1921 and 1923 for the University of Iowa in the 220, Randy Jackson 1980 for the University of Wisconsin in the 3000 steeplechase, and Joey Woody 1996 for the University of Northern Iowa in the 400 hurdles. Woody also has a Gold (4x400) and a Silver (400 hurdles) medal in the World Championships. Joey Woody is currently the Head Coach of Track & Field at the University of Iowa.
Tim Dwight was one of the greatest athletes to ever compete in the state of Iowa. On the track, Dwight holds four City High records, and won the 200 four times in high school. In 1993, Dwight figured in eleven of the twelve school records that were set. During Dwight's senior season he set all-time Iowa best marks in the 400 (48.73), 100 (10.19), and the 200 (20.72). He went on to All-American status in both football and track & field at the University of Iowa and was MVP of the Big Ten track & field meet his senior season prior to joining the NFL.
Coach Raffensperger became the first coach in Iowa history to win 10 state titles. He coached the Little Hawks for 33 years. Coach Raffensperger ended his career in 2003 with 10 state titles, 17 MVC titles, 119 major meet wins, 56 State Champions, 36 Drake Champions, one National Champion and six other National place winners.
